I think that TFA's vision was "Let's make a movie that's actually enjoyable to watch and features protagonists that are likable enough so that if we have them fight over a pit of lava, the audience won't be cheering for the lava to win." It's a stark departure from Lucas's vision for the prequels, to be sure, but it seems to have gone over fairly well with the general public.

Besides, it's kind of hard to top the ridiculous pseudoscience, unbelievable dialogue, endless political debates and racism of the prequels when the GOP primaries are right there.

Though I will say personally, after seeing 7 - I sort of liked the prequels better. At least there I was interested in finding out what the story was, and I liked Qui-Gon and young Obi-Wan, and even Anakin was cute. While it's true I haven't been inclined to rewatch them, I have very little inclination to rewatch TFA either. I wish TFA had been a movie I was interested in, and I'm glad Star Wars is on the map again, but...

Guess I'll be sticking to the original trilogy.
