Jumping back into fandom

Probably overthinking it, but I've been out of the fandom game for a while and I'm not really sure where to jump back in. I do some fanart, but dA and the oekaki scene seems pretty dead and I haven't had much luck on tumblr even though I'm tagging stuff and the work is decent, though I haven't kept at it for all that long.

Really all I want to do is geek out with other fans, but haven't had much luck. Any tips? I feel like I'm at a loss.

Rather not name them but it's mostly anime/manga stuff with a minor following, but I'll probably jump onto the Sun/Moon Pokemon hype train when more info comes out.

Tumblr may be shitty about a lot of fandom things, but it has an excellent Pokemon fandom, with some amazing fanartists and basically no wank as long as you follow the right people and don't trawl the tags.

Yeah, my sense is that with stuff like that, Tumblr is going to be wild sharing of content and Twitter is going to be more discussion-oriented, but that's just a rough impression and Twitter obviously has a ton of issues.

Tumblr honestly isn't as bad as people here say it is. It's perfectly possible to discuss things with other fans in the form of reblogs, asks, and messages, with a good detail of tagging your friends and stuff, and while it takes a little while to build up enough momentum/exposure for your growth to be self-perpetuating, it will happen.

You just need to be very picky about who you follow - make sure to only follow blogs whose vast majority of content is what you're interested in, not blogs who post a bit of content you're interested in and mostly crap you don't like, and make judicious use of the unfollow button without worrying about what people think. And blacklist like a motherfucker. Don't follow blogs that post a jumble of social justice-y stuff -- you can always bookmark a few blogs that post some things you like, and occasionally look through their relevant tags without actually following them.

Also, ONLY follow people who tag, unless 100% of their content is, like, their own fanart, or inoffensive gifset and fanart reblogs. The bane of tumblr is untagged posts. And you can state on your blog that the only thing you reblog is fandom-related stuff. That way you don't feel pressured to reblog all the other tumblr flotsam you see.

I agree 100%. I first tried Tumblr back in like... 2010/2011, but stopped a couple months later because it was genuinely negatively impacting my attitude? I was following too many of the wrong people, constantly seeing stuff that pissed me off, and I couldn't really stand it anymore.

But! I started using it again (with a brand new account) last November, and it's actually been pretty fantastic? I'm paying very close attention to the people I follow, immediately unfollowing anyone who brings in too much drama, and things are working out just fine!

It's really not as bad as people make it out to be.
