Well, you can talk to Cas fans about Cas. Ehh, sounds similar to Avengers fandom.

Who cares about the fandom. It's the amazing wealth of SPN fic that counts. (Even the canon is inferior to that in my view.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak on SPN specifically, as I'm not in the fandom, but this is how I generally feel about fandoms I'm in which are deemed embarrassing and overly crazy. None of that poisons or cheapens the fic, and I'm like 90% in it for the fic, so whatever. The fandom can be as nuts as it wants. The wank only gets to me when I let myself fixate on it. Then I go and read some more fanfic and remember that holy shit, it's so awesome how many people love the story and the character and have the coolest ideas for them and write the most awesome stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. SPN fandom scares me but the fic is awesome. That's all I need!

+1

I feel you, OP.

I'm not completely out of Supernatural fandom, but I'm very careful about my participation. And I've got a friend IRL that I watch with and talk about it with.

This seems to be the drama that drives most people away. I don't think the inconsistencies of the show help...

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My joke is that the writers write themselves into corners and then just walk right out.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. There are a lot of hardcore Dean girls and Sam girls who will champion one brother and paint him as a perfect martyr who can never do any wrong and blame literally every bad thing that's ever happened on the other brother and I think it's hilarious/frustrating because I love both Sam and Dean equally. I mean, I think it's fine if you prefer one brother over the other or dislike one of them because I think there are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike either one, but let's be real here, both Sam and Dean are complete and utter disasters (the quote "it's like God spilled a person" from Community always comes to mind when I think about them). That's what makes then fun imo. It's so boring when people jump through hoops to rationalize anything that could be considered a character flaw in either of them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. They've both made horrible mistakes (generally in the name of protecting each other) and done the absolute wrong things for the right reason. They've hurt each other in the name of the love they have for each other.

And that's what makes them so interesting to watch.

(I'm a Dean girl, btw. Because Jensen Ackles is just SO. DAMN. PRETTY. But I'm the first to admit that Dean's a fucked-up human being with enough issues to fill any dozen magazine stands.)

Exactly! I think Zachariah put it best when he said that they're "psychotically, irrationally, erotically co-dependent on each other."

FOr me personally, while I think they both fuck up equally, the show treats it very unequally. I do think the show favors Sam and lets him get away with things Dean can't get away with. And that bugs me. But yes, both brothers are equally bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's the exact opposite, which I think is the point this person is trying to make.

And that's cool. There is nothing wrong with interpreting either way, and people should be allowed to talk about their interpretations.

My fandom involvement pretty much consists of liking stuff from their page and Entertainment Weekly on Facebook and talking to a couple of rl friends who watch the show, with a very occasional trip onto the Tumblr tag to look at gifs (never right after an episode unless there's good wank to be seen). But ship wars and wank over who's the worst character ever can pop up anytime in the most random fannish space, along with the endless bitching from people who should have stopped watching years ago, so it's hard to avoid no matter what you do. Might as well find a relatively quiet corner and stay, lol. There are people in every fandom who are too stupid to deal with moral ambiguity in characters and need to make perfect heroes and worthless villains out of everyone, even protagonists on the same side who are equally fucked up. They're really unavoidable, and they never shut up. I just will never stop being baffled and amazed by anyone who can hate one brother as much as they do and still be able to watch it when they're together in like 85% of scenes and the whole thing is about their crazy love for each other. Or by the folks for whom Cas is still this brand new interloper who will surely go away if they hate him loudly enough, despite having been in the bulk of the series now, for the past eight damn years. I could never leave such an interesting fandom completely. lolol

I'm sorry you only seem to be finding the asshats of the fandom, Anon. I can promise you if you want to talk about Show, or the boys, or any other character, I won't become a raging hellbeast because you don't like who *i* like.

Oh, and! For some *amazing* meta on Show, as well as reviews (of only the first two seasons, but still), by someone who not only loves the show and both the boys, but loves the actors, as well, and knows a *ton* about technical stuff, cinematography, the history of cinema, etc.... Go here: http://www.sheilaomalley.com/?tag=supernatural

You'll have to go back a couple-three pages to get to the first SPN post, but it's worth it. She *loves* these guys.
