Pope washes feet

(Anonymous) 2016-03-27 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the Pope's duty is to wash penitent parishoners feet in public at Easter in a symbol of his humility and desire to serve, in Francis' credit is he does it a lot more easily and less reluctantly than his predecessors, do you think it ought to be a President's duty too? Remind them, publicly and practically, that they serve the public and have them wash the feet of the homeless a couple of times a year? I think yes, they should.

Well, that specific example might be a little overtly religious for a republic. But something along those lines might be good if you could think up a good, American ritual for it.

Doing the bathing, bedding, and feeding in a nursing home for a whole morning shift? And not a fancy care home, but a homeless veteran's one. One where there are a lot of dementia patients.

Maybe have the PotUS do something with vets, especially disabled vets or those with PTSD. Since the main job is Commander in Chief, they should be forced to remember that it's people like this that they're sending into war, and what happens afterward.

I'm not Christian, but I think helping the poor is explicitly in the Bible? America seems more about serving the "middle class".

Lots of religious people don't care about poor people at all.

Aw, this is almost subtle. Warms the cold cockles of my little black heart.

Anyways, I believe the Pope is genuine in his concern for the poor, and I believe he is genuine about reaching out to people. I wouldn't trust a single one of those bastards up in D.C. not to use a religious observation in an attempt to gain political points.

I'm having flashbacks to Catholic school now.

No, because the Pope is a religious figure imitating what Jesus did. Kind of a different place than another type of leader like a president or prime minister, which is more of a secular place.

I think all politicians should do a month's worth of community service before they are allowed to enter office. Oh, and also have to live on the minimum wage of their country for the same time.

Ok but who will agree to have their feet publicly washed, willingly

If the President is doing it, kneeling down and humbling himself before them, then I think there will be no shortage of volunteers. Nobody with a nervous twitch or tourettes though.

I didn't kick the President intentionally, I have a condition!

Well, no. The foot washing is a religious ritual, not a secular one. It wouldn't be appropriate for the President to do so, assuming we're talking about a head government where there is separation of church and state. Footwashing is one gesture of humility, it's not the only gesture or necessarily the best way to demonstrate it.

What would be more useful is to serve people in a soup kitchen. If I were homeless, I'd appreciate a good hot meal instead of being used as a pathetic prop to humiliate a politician.

Re: Pope washes feet

Soup kitchen work is more of a photo op (you do it on your feet and are on eye level and occasionally even taller, as opposed to literally at their feet) than actual having to put your hands on someone else's body and do physical work. I suppose changing adult diapers comes close, but you couldn't do it in public.

Re: Pope washes feet

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, there are people who work in soup kitchens every day. It CAN be a photo op, but it doesn't have to be. If you think that preparing and serving a meal to hundreds of people multiple times a day isn't "physical work" then clearly you've never even cooked a meal in your life. It's a hell of a lot more work than washing someone's feet.

As for the diapers comment? You know you can't embarrass/gross out politicians into being honest, right?

Maybe volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter? But I really like the idea of all public office holders having to live on minimum wage, in public housing, for a month of the year or something like that. Life is so shitty for so many, maybe at least some politicians would be more inclined to alleviate nasty inequality if they had to experience it.

Homeless people, not "the homeless".
