Eh, I don't think this is a new thing; I think it's just fandom-dependent. I was involved in the 'Dark Angel' ship war, and that was in 2001, and there were definitely people who would not associate in any way with folks who were on the "wrong" side of the divide.

People are always reacting to or against those who are different from them. It's the nature of that reaction that changes.
