Re: Fandom Outcast
(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 06:55 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I'll admit that it took me a few episodes to warm up to her. She's kind of a sanctimonious character at times and that bothered me at first but after a while I found that to just be an interesting aspect of her character (especially since she does some fairly immoral things herself). Overall, she was a good but flawed person who usually tried her hardest to do the right thing even when doing the right thing ended up being the not-so-right thing. There's probably a better way to phrase that but one of the specific examples I'm thinking of here is from the episode "Adrift" where she realized that although telling a woman that her missing son was alive seemed like the morally right idea, it turned out to be deeply emotionally traumatic for the woman when she found out the horrific fate that he suffered and that Jack was probably right all along when he told her that some things are just better left alone. I think that was one of the most emotionally impactful episodes of the show for me and definitely my favorite Gwen-centric one (and Myles was so great in it)
Eva Myles really is lovely and it upset me that some Gwen haters extended that hatred towards the actress as well. It's fine to dislike Gwen or any other character, but I haaaaate it when people can't separate their disdain for a certain character from the actor who portrays them. I don't know if any of it reached the actress herself, but I hope not because some of it was just terrible (in particular, some people took endless joy in mocking the gap she has in her teeth. I think she looks a bit endearing with it myself)
