Man if they ARE actually doing that it's incredibly petty. You should test your theory (though probably not stoop to their level).

Post a few a couple weeks apart instead of a month. See what happens.

I wonder what would happen if you asked them to stop only posting right after you, OP...that would probably just make you seem more petty and if they really are that petty they'd probably deny it.

It's pretty stupid though. Sounds frustrating. :/

Post a few a couple weeks apart instead of a month. See what happens.

This is a great idea.

OP, if you change the frequency of your updates and their updates still link up with yours, then you might actually be onto something.

And man, would that something be weird.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say exactly when it started, but I know the past two chapters of mine -- one with a 3 weeks gap, and another with an month gap -- had chapters of theirs appear like, within the hour. (So it's possible they are subscribed to me.)

Also, I haven't updated in nearly 4 months. No new chapters of their have appeared in that time, so we'll see waht happens when I finally get the chapter I'm working on posted.

It's just so hilariously petty. -- though okay, there is a petty part of me that wants them to know that I'm into them :p

Do they also go months between updates? Because some people seem to update their stories often enough that it might be a coincident.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't posted an update to that fic in months, and they haven't updated theirs in that timeframe either.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I once suspected something similar, when it felt like every time I made a post for a certain fandom in a multi-fandom recs comm, someone else in that comm would manage to dig up a rec for what could be considered a rival pairing in that fandom and post it quickly after me. It happened several times and wasn't a big deal but seemed really petty considering my ship was way less popular.

Try being really sporadic with your updates for awhile, so other poster can't predict your pattern easily, and see what happens. Like others have said, it may just be a really weird coincidence.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
If you're posting that rarely and erratically, it's not very likely that they're holding back chapters just in case you happen to get a chapter of your story up. There wouldn't be any benefit in it for them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
If it's true, it's really stupid - most people sort by kudos or bookmarks anyway.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Do they update more frequently than you, though? Because if they update like, on a weekly basis or something, it could just be coincidence that it falls on the same day you update. I mean, waiting until your rival updates to post your chapter just seems /really/ petty and stupid...I can't even imagine the mental bandwidth they'd have to use up waiting for you to update just so they can top you in the search results, especially since most people sort by bookmarks or kudos or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was posting chapters about once a month for a while, with them as an echo, but what really made me notice is that I haven't posted for months now, and neither have they.

I realize it still could be coincidence, but we'll see.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you decide to bait them with a chapter, let us know what happens! I'm really curious to see if it's just a coincidence or if they really are just that petty and dumb.

You can try really stepping up your output for a bit and leaving them in the dust. :D :D :D

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The thought crossed my mind! If it happens again after the long-delayed chapter I'm currently working on gets posted, I might try to put together the last few chapters as quickly as possible (just to have the fic done).

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
you two should fuck

Oh, good idea! I doubt I'll come first.

You sound jealous that their fic is more popular.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not at all. I totally accept that they're writing the sort of fic, with the sort of ships, that a lot of people like to read.

(I just don't get why, if indeed they are messing with me, why they care.)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Write two chapters, post one, then post the second a couple of days later.

+1

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
came here to say this.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
You could write 2 chapters _ post one, let them do their petty thing, then post another right after?

Or yeah post wait delete and repost. Only do it the once so they can't be sure you're into them. Make them wonder ;)

Try not to let it get to you. Think about how weird their frame of mind is to be doing this!
