You could just void WIPS - it might make you miss out on things, but it would stop the dread?

Also, DO comment (not in a "when will you update" way, but in a "i liked this, this, and this about the fic" way.) The fanfic police will get me for this, but I'm more motivated to write if I think a lot of people are enjoying the fic.

Anybody who gets you for that is hella dumb. You're not holding fic hostage for comments and it's 100% logical that people are motivated to write when they're getting feedback.
