Dexter was always such a mixed bag, that just kind of became a mess.
IMO
Season 1: Really good!
Season 2: All right...not bad, but not as good as season 1.
Season 3: A complete mess. Hated it.
Season 4: Pretty freaking good!!
Season 5: Forgettable. I don't think I finished it.
Season 6: Started out kind of promising but went downhill quickly, I can't recall finishing it.
Season 7: Didn't even tune in.
Season 8: Wait there's 8 seasons?! No one wonder people said the ending sucked.

Totally agree with your evaluation! Season 4 was really where it should have stopped because no way were the writers going to top that arc. Sadly the books kinda followed the same pattern (not plot, just the fluctuations in quality) and provided no respite from disappointment.
