Story Length

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your average word length or the story length that feels most comfortable for your style? For fics that were shorter or longer, what did you do differently for those?

How long would it take you to write a standard getting-together story? Or, what kind of story can you tell in 500 words, 5000 words, 50,000 words, etc.?

Non-authors, what do you expect to get when you see a story of 500, 5K, 10K or 100K words?

Average is between 1000 words and 2000 words. I mostly write PWPs. The longest I've written is 5500 words.

I tend to write between 15,000 and 20,000 words. It's long enough to tell one complete character arc with a minimum of subplots.

Roughly 1,000 - 5,000. Any longer and my plotlines become uneven.

I would say my comfort level is at least 50,000 words, maybe more.

I have written shorter but they're only vignettes, mostly for exchanges or kink memes. Even then, a lot of them end up being at least 10,000. Short and sweet is not really in my wheelhouse.

Agreed, 50,000 minimum. I tend to write plotty fics, and even the tiniest nugget of a fic idea seems to grow into a full-fledged fic. Most of mine are around 50-80K.

My stories tend toward the 1500 - 5000 range. "Getting-together" stories are on the longer side of that.

500 words? I'm exploring a single thought or moment. 5000, I'm solving a problem, or taking a character through an emotional arc. I've never written a 50,000 word piece of fanfiction (my longest piece so far is 47k), but I have written original stories that go beyond that length, and can say that that sort of work is plot-driven.

My stories usually end up really tiny, like 500 to 1,500 words. Mostly that's because I just have a silly joke I want to tell or a small scene in my head that I want to share.

I've been trying to write longer stories though. No good results yet, but practice makes perfect.

Under 5k.

My most popular story has 5k kudos and is less than 2k.

Depending on what I'm writing, it can be anywhere from 1000 to 9000 words. It just depends what I'm wanting to expand on at the time.

A getting-together story would probably be definitely over 5000 words. Unless it's just a quick PWP haha. But I tend to throw some plot in with my porn.

This is me as well. 1000-9000 is my usual. I have done a couple around 15,000, and once or twice I tried for longer, but I've only ever completed one 50,000+ fic.

Fanfic, I tend to either write drabbles (PROPER drabbles of exactly 100 words) or in the 1-2 thousand word range.

Drabbles tend to be "moments" and longer fics could be whatever. I tend to one-shots, though.

Origfic: I usually shoot for about 90K words.
