I don't think this is all that strange or pathetic. I've definitely gotten that sinking feeling before when it seems like a WIP I really love won't be finished.

As others have suggested, it might just be better for you to forego WIPs. It can kind of suck if fandom is squeeing over a WIP that you're not reading, but it'll probably save you loads on the anxiety front.

Not OP, but if a fandom is squeeing over a WIP fic there's a new fear, at least for me, that the author might take the fic down if I don't save it. And saving the fic on my kindle definitely makes me want to read it. :P
