Fairly serious fan here, wrote my dissertation on Berubara, and here's my Hot Take on the animation:

1. you may grow to like some of the characteristics which you initially find jarring. For a show of its period and budget, it's pretty rad looking quite a lot of the time.

2. If you can hold out that far, after episode 16, famous and wonderful director Osamu Dezaki takes over, and the show immediately looks great. It's much more obviously linked to Utena, and there are some really cool cuts and structural quirks! It really does change a lot.
