Most train systems can be researched online these days. Do some googling to figure out your route, the schedule, how many changes, and where. Googlemap the hell out of the area to familiarize yourself with it, mark down whatever you think you'll need in the way of restaurants, etc. The train system you're using will not only have schedules online, but they'll likely have FAQs covering the whole process and etiquette too, because most Americans aren't accustomed to mass transit systems.

For the journey, pack your own snacks and water and something to read or music/podcasts to listen to.
