Well, Astrid Lindgren's stories have a lot of surprisingly dark elements in them. I once read an interpretation of Mio, min Mio where the main character is actually freezing to death on that park bench and the entire story is just a last fantasy/hallucination as he's dying.

I haven't read the book since 6th grade (maybe?), but I think the dying interpretation was the one we went with back then.

She's written a short story that's explicitly about two children freezing to death in the woods as they hallucinate about finding Eden, so that might not be so far away from the truth.

And now I was suddenly reminded of Spelar min lind, sjunger min näktergal/My nightingale is singing. I cried and cried after my mom read that story to me when I was little, and I'm not lying when I say I've been crying for the past 15 minutes just remembering it.
