Fandom Talk

What do you want to talk about?

Ru Paul's Drag Race here

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-04-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Who's your favorite this season? Who's your favorite overall?

I hate to say it but so far I'm stanning pretty hard for Acid Betty, even though I really didn't want to. I loved Laila and now she was booted off so early. :(

Overall, Willam is best queen. It cannot be denied.

I like thorgy... and kim... and chichi.

I pretty much like them all really. They cast really great queens this season. To be honest out of the queens left I think derrick and naomi are the only ones that don't deserve to win and it's not because I don't like them, it's just that I think they don't stand out like all the others.

How are you guys feeling about the things that were revealed at the Uncovered event? Have you tried the new demo? Watched the anime*? Rewatched the movie trailer**? I'm superhyped about just about everything right now personally :D

I just watched the anime - haven't had time for the rest, and it's not like I'll be able to play the game. I kind of miss the crazy character designs, tbh. Especially in the anime, they look pretty drab, and the blond dude is giving me very strong Cloud/Roxas flashbacks (and I've spent the past few weeks looking at every available image of Cloud's hair in preparation for wig styling, so I know dem spikes).
I like the boss monster with all the hands, though. And I liked the interaction, they definitely have the buddy feel going.

I played the demo and I was totally underwhelmed by it. It's just a bunch of button-smashing with terrible camera problems. I'm probably not going to get it.

i love prompto's freckles...although i kinda miss the old design lol

Re: Final Fantasy XV

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I downloaded the demo but haven't played it yet. I watched the first episode of the anime. I like the setting and the characters seem alright.
I have one major problem though: I was so happy when they announced in the very beginning that there would be no romance. Now it looks like there will be romance after all, so yeah. If there is, I won't play the game. I'm so sick of romance in Final Fantasy games. It's almost always insanely badly written, cringey and absolutely superfluous.

Re: Final Fantasy XV

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
wait there's going to be romance?

Re: Final Fantasy XV

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
*Spoilers ahead*

Luna and Noctis are engaged from the very beginning of the game. It's arranged I think. The main focus seems to be on the friendship between the guys though.

Project Runway

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-04-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Since there is another reality show thread. How do people feel about this All Star season?

Are you as annoyed with the Sam and Kini drama as I am? Yes, Kini helped Sam with a part of his dress for that challenge Sam won. He didn't make the whole thing, he's being an ass about it, and Kini, who was a favorite on his first season, needs to shut up and stop being a jerk.

Also, I was pissed off about last week's results. Valerie going home was ridiculous. Her thing actually looked nice and wearable. I was rooting for her to win, so I'm mad she's out.

Re: Project Runway

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I just fast forwarded through the Sam Kini drama. It's so dumb.

I feel like the judges have been unreasonably hard on Valerie and Layana. I just don't like the all star judges as much as the regular season judges.

I agree about the judges. I also miss Tim. He really makes the show. But the all star judges seem to be really obvious about keeping people for drama.

I'm kind of meh on Layana, but I loved Valerie. Right now I'm not sure who I want to win anymore. I was really rooting for her.

I generally (in their own words) often question the judges taste levels on the Project Runway shows. At least on Allstars , there is no Heidi Klum who only ever lo es the most skimpy dresses no matter how ugly. I generally prefer the Allstars judges, but I often don't agree with them either.
The Sam and Kini drama is getting so old by now. Like, how damn salty can a person be, Kini? And how much of a conceited little shit, Sam? I wish they'd both go away or shut up.

I miss Kors. I feel like he was the best judge on the original. And he and Nina together were usually good. Although, Heidi and Tim were right the season Gretchen won instead of Mondo. What was with that? But generally I prefer Kors and Garcia.

Re: Project Runway

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
I think Garcia is kinda hit and miss with her judgements. But damn, the Gretchen season was just... strange.

I absolutely love how the judges hate on crop tops this Allstar season, though. I always thought crop tops are terrible haha!

(Also: What the hell was going on with Kesha's hair when she was guest judge last episode. That colour...)

There's a lot of meta going around about Gandalf so I'm in the mood to talk about him.

Re: Fandom Talk - Tolkien

I love Gandalf. I think he's one of the characters that cares about the greater good and is a bit of a Chessmaster while still at the same time deeply caring for people (especially Hobbits) and doing what he can to help and protect them. So it is a nice balance to me where many characters tend too much in one or the other direction.

Re: Fandom Talk - Tolkien

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely hated Gandalf after reading the books. I felt he was manipulative and I hate manipulative characters, even if they are doing things for the right reason. I still don't really like him. However, the recent meta has been picking apart his portrayal in the movies, which has given me a little more respect for him in the books. His characterization in the Hobbit movies is as bad as all the other characters.

I'm actually more interested in his actions during the Hobbit book. In Unfinished Tales, he explains what really happened and how hard it was to get Thorin to take Bilbo, etc. He says his main motivator was to get rid of Smaug so he and Sauron can't be buddies. He says it's important that Lorien and Rivendell be spared (not one mention of Mirkwood and Thranduil). But, I don't understand how exactly that was supposed to work. How was sending 13 dwarves and a hobbit to steal a handful of gold (nothing about the Arkenstone in this plot) going to take out Smaug?

Okay, he says there's a divine intervention and he went with that. But surely he must've given some practical thought to the matter. But what I want to know most is what he was doing in BoFA. He must've known there were goblins on the way. Why didn't he say anything before this? And why didn't he warn Thranduil about the Quest. He said he planned to take out Sauron (who everyone knew was in Dol Guldur at the time) so as to help take out Smaug, but he didn't bother to give Thranduil a heads up? He didn't say anything to Laketown? Preparations could've been made. There is nothing, to my knowledge, that suggests they had to make their Quest in the year they made it. The moon for the door would've come once a year. So, they could've stockpiled food and materials to rebuild. Or, they could've rightly said fuck off. Gandalf had to realize that lives were likely to be lost but there's no indication that this is something that matters to him (in UT or the Hobbit).

Like, I understand the rationale overall as to the need. But the fact that he doesn't seem to even consider it really bothers me.

I do kind of agree. He seems to just kind of assume things are going to work out. I actually wonder if he was being told things or had been told things. Because otherwise how did he know things would work out doing them the way he did.

Supernatural

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
The most recent episode of Supernatural, Red Meat, was AWESOME.

Tense and scary and heart-wrenching. It was a good old-school scary episode, like the first 5 seasons.

(Overall, I'm really enjoying this season. Supernatural's really gotten its groove back.)

But all Tumblr wants to talk about is whether this one line at the end supports Wincest or Destiel.

I ship destiel but it seems incredibly obvious to me that Dean was definitely thinking about Sam during the scene in question. Like, it wasn't subjective. He literally just saw the man he loved, whether you think it's in a platonic or wincest-y way, (supposedly) die. And tbh, deep down, I think most destiel shippers realize that, whether they want to admit it or not.

That said, I've seen a lot of general discussion about the episode on my dash. Is there anything in particular that you wanted to talk about?

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a casual Destiel shipper too, but that line is just so obviously about Sam, given the context of the Whole. Damn. Episode. You don't have to think that Sam and Dean are boinking to know that they're the most important people in each other's lives.

General thoughts:

How badass is Sam Winchester? I mean, I'm a Dean girl through and through, but Sam! Gutshot and just out of shock and he still drags himself up and kills two werewolves hand-to-hand and drives himself to the hospital and saves Dean!

Sam and Dean's "deaths" in this were both so brutal and un-heroic. Sam smothered and being unable to save himself because he's in too much pain, Dean convulsing and spitting up. Very in-your-face about the horror of both of them.

Billie: what's her real agenda? If she hadn't told Dean that Sam was still alive, I think there's a fairly good chance that he would've gone with her. So was it really an error in her part that she let that piece of information slip? (She also gave Sam the key he needed to cure himself in the first episode of the season.)

Is Death really dead? (Not directly related to this episode, but with Billie there it got me thinking.)

Corbin died way too easily. He's lucky he was shot and insta-killed by Sam, instead of having a very pissed-off Dean taking him apart. (But he was such an interesting mirror for Dean and the lengths he will go to to save Sam.)

Dean getting tazed! I was getting ready to see him charge back up the trail, but no. Bzzzt, and down. Because as much of a badass as he is, he's still human, and a few volts will short out his nervous system just as much as anybody else's.

Dean's lie to Sam at the end. Backsliding from his honesty at the end of "Love Hurts" but I don't think Sam is fooled. Like, AT ALL.

Re: Supernatural

(Anonymous) 2016-04-02 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wincest shippers have had it so good this season that I don't even care that Destiel shippers are deliberately misinterpreting the line. I feel kind of bad for them; this season has been a bit dry on the Dean/Cas front. Just...let them have it. They're hungry.

The episode was so good though. Most of the season has been really nailing it (I have some issues with it here and there, but I'm really enjoying it overall). It's been a long time since I've wanted to punch a villain in the face as much as I did with Corbin. Dude had pretty eyes though, even he was a dirty, murderous hipster.

Season 11 is amazeballs. I thought 10 was pretty good, too, until it fell apart in the last three episodes.

Red Meat was fantastic in terms of action, how it looked and sounded, how it was tense. I do have two major problems with it:

1) complete lack of character development. Dean has been sacrificing himself (and other people) to keep Sam alive for years. You would think that after eleven years (and forty years in hell) he would learn. At least the canon now openly acknowledges that he does it for selfish reasons. Also, Dean lying to Sam at the end.

2) the bad medicine. Dean removing Sam's bullet without sterile equipment. (Why? A bullet doesn't kill you instantly just by being there.) Dean not trying CPR when Sam is warm and not breathing. The cop telling the doc to sedate Dean when he had just recovered from a narcotics overdose. Not to mention the fact that Sam should have bled out or died from sepsis after dragging himself around town with a gaping wound in his stomach.

Still, a really tense episode. That scene where Sam gets strangled is one of the most intense scenes in the history of the show.
