Yeah, I can usually give a pass to a canon couple. It's not unreasonable to expect they might be in the background. But when they are NOT actually a couple in canon and people seem to forget that - that shit is annoying right there. I think some people can become lost in their headcanons and forget that their headcanons are not the same for everyone.

That was a big thing in the Harry Potter fandom where people just assumed it was canon even though it didn't happen yet. It was pretty clear that it was going to be canon, but it wasn't set in stone until it actually happened in the books. But there was a certain subset of fans who thought it was already canon and people thinking there could be a chance the author could go a different direction were bad fans.

Yeah, there was definitely a bit of this in early LOTR fandom. The Aragorn/Legolas group (which was the biggest Legolas group besides Legolas/Gimli IIRC) was mostly a movie fandom and dismissed as not "real" (I mean, I do think they were shipped mostly because of the actors but I don't think that's an illegitimate reason to ship). The Legolas/Gimli shippers definitely had a sense that it was canon. Their main opposition was actually the people who were hardcore Legolas&Gimli friendship and there was the general accusations of homophobia and such. I shudder to think what it would've looked like if tumblr had been a thing.

It was similar with the Fingon/Maedhros ship back in the day, which became an NOTP for the same reason (untagged and ubiquitous). Silm's always been smaller but in the fics that existed, Fingon/Maedhros were assumed and you were a bad fan if you didn't ship it (except for the incest wank). Really turned me off both pairings where I didn't have any opinion on Fingon/Maedhros initially. But, to this day, they're a huge NOTP because of this shit.

I'm actually really glad I missed that because I do tend to end up NOTPing ships when they are assumed like this. And I actually really like Fingon/Maedhros, but I would totally NOTP it if I had been a part of the fandom then.

I kind of remember a bit of this being in the Sam/Frodo ship when the movie first came out too. I shipped a bit, but I got soured because people accused non-shippers (and even Tolkien) of homophobia because of course they were gay and would have been in canon if Tolkien hadn't been a homophobe. Even though close male friendships can be a thing. I mean, Tolkien was probably just as homophobic as anyone of his time. But that doesn't mean Sam/Frodo would have been canon if he wasn't or that it actually is canon.

Eugh, don't remind me about the people that always put Ron/Hermione in Harry/Ginny fics. I like Harry/Ginny, dislike Ron/Hermione. This was pre-HBP, too.

This was exactly me. Harry/Ginny isn't my favorite Harry ship, but I do like it. But it is all but impossible to find without Ron/Hermione.
