Re: Who is your Umbridge
However, I will share one of the most awful experiences of my undergrad. In the last year of my degree I decided to do some volunteer work with a very prominent project in psych, and the person who interviewed me for the position seemed incredibly nice. She couldn't pay me to volunteer at the research facility and she was in the nursing department (ie. not my own department) so instead she talked to the head of the psych department to nominate me for a $1500.00 award as compensation. Three months went by without a single email from her, and I had completely forgotten about it and applied for an honours position in a different lab, which accepted me.
Then out of the blue I found out I got the award (very unexpected since only three are awarded per department and my "project" was essentially just helping out on a national research initiative), so the next thing you know I was volunteering for the centre.
And that's when I found out she was a huge bitch. A few months on I got booted off that project and told I was going to have to do a scoping review of another project instead, which was going to be impossible in the time frame she was expecting it in. She also wanted me to present this new project at a conference, and again this was an impossibility due to the fact that I had an entirely different thing going on which had to take priority.
Anyway, the deadline for presenting my original thing was fast approaching and I had to write a poster on what I had been doing, which had to go through her for approval. Nearly twenty nonsensical edits later she phoned me up to say she was removing her name from everything because I had "misrepresented studies" and my work was "something that could be done in a weekend", never mind the fact that every single thing I had supposedly misrepresented was due to the edits she asked for. Also never mind that I had spent a literal month doing essentially what amounted to a meta-analysis.
This was three days before the deadline, and I risked losing the money if I couldn't get approval. Luckily, my other supervisor in the psych department was distinctly not crazy, and was able to see me on incredibly short notice to tell me that my work was fine and I had done the right thing by standing up for the integrity of my work.
So yeah. If that counts, there you go.
