How exactly are we defining the word toxic in this context? I assumed it was being used to mean "extremely unpleasant or stressful, possibly causing loss of faith in humanity".

Toxic, to me, is when something is fucked in a way that it can't be improved without some kind of radical, total change - where there's some structural or historical or personality-based problem that means that engagement is doomed to be unhealthy.

I think there are maybe discussions on FS that approach that point - the kinds of things we recognize as landmines. I don't think the community as a whole is like that.

And, like, to be clear, these are definitely things that frustrate me about F!S sometimes. I'm not saying these aren't issues. I just don't think it's that kind of concentrated, intense, nasty, inescapable fucked.

Well, if that's the definition you're using: I would argue that the flaws we're seeing here are a result of society's overall toxic attitudes towards trans people, Jews, Muslims, etc. leaking into F!S, and that there's no way to really fix that without radically overhauling society as a whole (which I don't think is feasible right now, sadly, and certainly not something that can be accomplished by a bunch of people airing their grievances on a slowly dying fandom comm).

toxicity has to do with how something is affecting people, not with how it's structured...
