#1- That's absolutely ridiculous. It's so ridiculous that it makes me almost want to cry because of how empty that message is. If you really believed in your religion, you would have found ways to deal with it and fandom. Fandom is supposed to be a way of expressing yourself, not a place of OMG OPPRESSION and DEVIANCE. Damn it! Own up to your faith and your actions. Don't blame other people for what you freely choose to do.

Word.

I think the point of the secret is that some people aren't that strong enough to just say that they believe in so-and-so religion, therefore they feel like they have to hide it. It sounds weird, but I think it does happen.

All I see is someone blaming fandom in general for something negative. Fandom didn't make them do anything. They did it themselves.

Btw, I'm a Christian, too. But I take responsibility for what I reveal of myself, and how participating in fandom affects my spiritual health.

This secret says something else to me as well. Not only does the secret maker blame fandom for making them hide his/her beliefs, in order to participate with this viewpoint, he/she would also had to hide from his/her beliefs to satisfy his/her presence in fandom. That's also a coward's way out and very spiritually damaging. This all was done by his/her own choice.

I understand your point. I'm also a Christian, so it makes for a very weak believer if you can't even admit that you are one. And yes, fandom didn't make them do it, but it affected this person differently. Just because they don't own up to the fact that they're a Christian or whatever they are doesn't mean they don't believe; just that their faith is weak or underdeveloped. I'm guessing something has happened to the OP to make them feel ashamed of their religious beliefs, which may or may not be true; there's not much to go by in the secret. If so, then that is the sad part.

It was their choice to blame fandom, but it wasn't their fault to feel that they needed to hide their beliefs. You can't help how you feel or how someone's words will affect you. Again, vague secret is vague, so their reasons specifically have been lost.

I actually think that the secret made it quite clear who's at fault which is why I'm reacting this way and discussing from my stated current viewpoint. This isn't the first time a posted secret has blamed general fandom for something that was negatively perceived. Fandom doesn't support violent acts, nor does it make anyone do anything. It's all personal choice by individuals and numerous individual groups. Fandom doesn't make you a victim, only you can make yourself a victim in fandom for making bad choices.

I think it more comes down to the fact that it's not fandom. It's a general stigma that Christianity is getting due to people like Fred Phelps and other "big names." Fandom just winds up being a convenient staging ground.

That said, there's a lot of people in fandom that will literally attack you for agreeing with a religion-related secret (because obviously you're an intolerant, close-minded asshole, amirite?), and that, to me, is pretty fucking sad.

It really IS fucking sad that that happens. I'm not surprised if it happens in a fandom for an anime/game/show that has tons/a little of religious symbolism in it. The people who like it yet attack others about religion are huge WTFing hypocrites.

I think it more comes down to the fact that it's not fandom. Yes. That's the reason why I've reacted to this secret like this. It's not fandom that's persecuting this secret maker, it's the intolerant individuals who are going to that extreme. Fandom in general is too big to think that one group is like the rest. I'm pretty confident that there are other fans out there that are open with similar beliefs. There's no need to have to hide.
