You don't have to hide it, you just don't have to shove it down people's throat all of the time. If your friends don't like you for having your faith, even when you're doing nothing, then maybe you're just in the wrong part of fandom.

The problem with that is there are some people out there who think that Christian = Biblemonger automatically. I don't have any specific examples of wank like this because the attackers were all anonymous and the threads are usually deleted, but I've seen it happen (and have been dragged into it as well, online and in real life). In some groups, they're the enemy out to convert you and hate on your homosexuality no matter what; even if the person themselves haven't proven themselves to be narrow-minded, they should be chased out before they have the chance. As athiests and proud voices of Science and Reason, they take it upon themselves to enlighten Christians who are misguided by an outdated faith. It's no different than the Biblemongers they hate so much, but sadly, it's generally more accepted. You'll get dogpiled if you say anything that could be interpreted as Christian bigotry, but a lot of people won't raise a finger to someone who's lecturing a poor sop about the crusades and anti-gay laws and how horrible certain Christian followers are, and how this guy should own up to it and explain it all.

Granted, most online communities aren't swarming with bastards like that, but it does happen. Number one has probably learned the lesson the hard way, and is just sick of having anonymice pick at them.

I'm aware of that, which is why I say that the OP should probably look for a better community because there are also many nice people. Of course, if the OP's fandom happens to be rather small or the OP happens to be quite attached to them it can't be helped.

The problem with that though, is that there really isn't a safe haven. The topic of religion is volatile, so just a mention of it could set off a conga line of wank. Some people think it's best to just hide it instead of risking that, and really, if I was in that situation I'd probably do the same. You never know who's reading your threads. From what I've seen, it's usually in multifandom communities anyway, and the attackers probably aren't well-known people in them; you're missing out on meeting a lot of people if you just stay away from potential danger zones.
