Cosplay really isn't that scary. If you ever want any tips or suggestions I'm always willing to help. Also, cosplay.com is a great place to get tips from others.

You'd be surprised how many people don't. I know first approaching the hobby can be kind of intimidating. I remember looking at cosplayers like Adella and Yaya back in the day and never thinking I could ever come close in comparison. Then I actually tried cosplay. I started out simple and used some found items and then altered them and sewed a few things for it. I actually did use my real hair after cutting and styling it.

The key is if you're uncertain about cosplay, start simple. Find a character or design you like that's not too complex and try to replicate it. Or alternatively you could buy or commission a costume to get a feel for it.

And really the cosplay.com forums -- while I rarely have used them myself -- are a great place for tutorials and tips. You might come across a few cosplayers who think that being rude somehow makes them better, but from my experience a lot of cosplayers are lovely people and they're often willing to help you with questions.

Everyone has to start somewhere. So you should really look into it if you want to cosplay because I've had a blast.

Well, it really depends on how complex a costume is. It'd suggest limebarb.com for commissions since she does some lovely work, though I know that a lot of her stuff is in the $200+ range. Also, try communities like [livejournal.com profile] cosplay_com and ask around since I know that you can probably get a lot more feedback there than from just one person. You can alternatively look on eBay for costumes since there are a lot of Hong Kong sellers who carry a lot of costumes from popular series and they're usually around the $50 range. Wigs can be purchased from cosworx.com, amphigory.com and there are a lot of sellers on eBay who sell decent quality wigs for a fraction of the price, though most are based in Asia and therefore you'll need to allow for shipping costs and time.

Also, cosplayers do sell off their costumes from time to time and though those can range anywhere from $50 to $1000 depending, it could be a nice way to snag a fabulous pre-made costume if the size is right. I've sold off a few of mine in the past and the buyers have always been really happy with the costumes. I don't take commissions myself due to time constraints, however my sister who I will say is arguably a better seamstress than I does take commissions and she'd probably be in a position to make something in the future.

The best thing is to look around, weigh your options and decide how much you want to invest in something and go from there. Some will be a lot less expensive than others depending on difficulty and materials. I usually spend about $200+ on materials alone on each costume but I like high end fabrics so there are much cheaper alternatives.

It really depends. I think as long as you're completely honest about having commissioned costumes or bought them then it's perfectly fine. While I make all my own stuff, I have some friends who wear costumes made my other people -- sometimes friends, sometimes commissioners -- and as long as you're not going around claiming to have made it on your own, no one's going to care I think.

I would totally have a costume commissioned just for the fun of it myself in the future. I've been thinking about getting a original design done by [livejournal.com profile] lillyxandra just because I love her work and I'd feel perfectly fine doing so.

Cosplay should always be about fun first and foremost, so I really hope you try it sometime in the future because I've had a lot of fun myself.
