Then, which would be more impressive.. Someone completing the game without looking at the guide (freehand), or someone who follows every single step listed in an FAQ to complete it (by-the-numbers)?

Neither.

Painting and gaming are apples and oranges.

A game is a game. It's there to be played and enjoyed. Doesn't matter which way a person chooses to play it. It's their game. They bought it, and if they enjoy playing it with a FAQ printed out with neat little bulletpoints sitting on their lap the entire time, then they're every bit the gamer as the person who plays it straight through with no help from anyone.

Because, it's just a game. Winning a video game to me is not something to be impressed with, but expected. You buy the game to play and beat it, yes? And hopefully, you like the game along the way, and don't have too many urges to throw the controller across the room.

A gamer who uses guides and a gamer who doesn't use guides are, at the end of the day, just gamers. Like the rest of us. Play it how you like, but don't think you're better than anyone else because of your style.

I never really said it makes them a better gamer, but it does make someone a lot less lazy to think about the game for themselves. Puzzle games and games like Phoenix Wright are nothing but thinking--if you use a walkthrough for the entire thing, all you're doing is pushing buttons to advance dialouge, not playing--the point of the game is to solve the case through thinking and applying logic. If you take that out, it takes no skill--it's just a visual novel at that point.

That, to me, is not only lazy, but it even devalues the game. I never fully appreciate something if I cannot do it for myself. Like the 16th colossus in Shadow of the Colossus--I can get all the way up to his back, but I tried and failed to climb up to his shoulder so many times that I had my brother do it for me. I don't feel good about it, and I don't even count that game as 'beaten' because I'm so pathetic I couldn't do it for myself. Using a guide the entire game is kind of like that, to me.. I don't really think anyone can consider themselves a gamer if someone else does all of the work for them. Someone doing that might as well not even be holding the controller.

See? Just my point. That's how you play. But not everyone plays like you, nor are you a better gamer because they play differently.

If you enjoy a game by using a FAQ all the way through, more power to you. I don't use a FAQ through every part of games I play, but I don't think I'm appreciating the game more than a person who does. Because that's how they have fun playing.

Play the game the way you feel like playing it. Have fun with it in your own way. That's what it's there for. Guide or no guide, if you enjoy it, then you're just fine. To think otherwise is entirely missing the point of games to begin with.
