1. Well, now you know a mere fraction of what the rest of us non-privileged folk go through outside of fandom :D :D :D Kindly cry moar and shut the fuck up, thanks ♥

NEWS FLASH: persecution is persecution no matter who it's directed towards. Just because someone is in the majority doesn't mean that they don't have the right to be hurt by people prejudging them or calling them stupid or sheeple or what-not.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
persecution is persecution no matter who it's directed towards.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA+...

Srsly, that made my day XD But then, your brand of stupidity usually does.

per·se·cu·tion (pûr'sĭ-kyōō'shən)
n.

1. The act or practice of persecuting on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or beliefs that differ from those of the persecutor.

Do you see where it mentions that only certain people can be persecuted? Or that only people in the minority can feel hurt when people label or hate them for who they are? Because I don't.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to be young and inexperienced, so I'm not going to be mean here.

Persecution is persecution no matter what and it hurts everyone, yeah, but there is a large, marked difference on a societal between prejudice towards a minority group and prejudice towards a majority group. People in minority groups tend to be affected by it a)more often and b)on a wider scale.
The discrimination against minorities is also often institutionalized, which means the people discriminating against them are almost always in much higher positions of power, and this can affect the lives of the minorities in a bigger way than a minority can possibly affect the lives of the majority.

I am by no means agreeing with the original poster, since all discrimination is horrible, but... there is a difference :/ As someone who has one aspect of my identity as a majority, and another as a minority, there really is a giant difference between the two.

IAWTC!

And we're back to the oppression olympics.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't fair that you take shit. But you know what? It isn't fair that the OP or anyone else has to take shit, too. Just because you're hurt by members of one group absolutely does not mean you should wish similar things on other people. That will do nothing but make you no better than the people that hurt you.

Hate sucks. Period. Regardless of belief/privilege/sexuality/whatever. And maybe the world would be a better place if people started getting that through their thick skulls.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hello maturity! It's totally okay to bash someone as long as they aren't a tiny minority. And the situations you and the secret poster are in are totally not identical in any way whatsoever.

I'll eat my foot if you respond to this with your actual account, 'cause I'm sure you know damn well how retarded you sound.

OP

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't going to comment, but...

As a POC who grew up poor, I know just a little about "non-privileged" folk. Mockery hurts the same no matter what.
karel: (tomoe; tonight we drink to you)

You know, this privilege argument is really getting fucking old.

It comes down to the fact that everyone deserves to be treated like a human being, no matter who they are or what they believe.

Majority and minority groups are a political construct that are honestly, in many ways, making the problem worse (though at the same time, the legal protection is, in many cases, badly needed, so it's kind of a lose-lose situation :\) by putting up walls between people.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-14 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's about time someone said this. Couldn't have done it better myself. Thumbs up to you :)

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-03-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, to an extent. Yeah, she maybe takes some shit online, but she can log off talk to 90% of the country (provided she's American) about it and get sympathy.

It's analagous to a black man refusing to hire a white man because of his race. Yes, it sucks, and it's discrimination, but it's certainly not "reverse racism", and it's certainly less harmful on both a personal and broader scale than vice versa.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2008-03-15 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Trufax. Anonymous troll is anonymous troll, but there is a slight grain of truth to their asshattery.

Plus, there's no good reason for anyone in fandom to know what religion you practice. Your faith -- or lack thereof -- is your own personal business.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-03-15 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Even if there wasn't (which there is, sad to say), it's just... kind of ludicrous to suggest that not just a majority but a MASSIVE majority has to "hide in the shadows" or what have you.

I saw someone respond to one of your other comments I think by comparing sharing one's faith in fandom with sexual orientation or gender. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't faith (as far as something that's supposed to remain completely personal, especially Christianity---though I'm not expert haha) like on a totally different level? I mean, I can look at you on the street and know you're female, but unless you're walking around with a giant cross on your neck or somesuch I have no idea what you are religion-wise.

Why shouldn't it be the same in fandom?

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2008-03-15 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
That wasn't mine, but I saw it on page 2. And you're right. Even online, hiding your gender in a gaming community is also not the same because there tend to be a LOT of offhanded sexist comments made on a board full of horny teenage boys playing games wherein female characters are intended as nothing but pixellated wet dreams.
