49. I dunno. I started out reading the scanlation manga. I've only watched three eps of the anime. Maybe there's some slight difference that the manga readers picked up? I dunno. I like the manga best.

Imo, the anime made him appear evil from the start, whilst in the manga you could really sense his innocence and naivety in the first few chapters, and the extent to which the Death Note corrupted him over time. In the first episode of the anime, they did various things such as making him eyes look all blank in the classroom scene (I suppose that was to make him look bored, but it didn't really come off that way), having his bedroom completely dark (in the manga, it was pretty bright which symbolised to me Light's hope for the future. Ryuk was by contrast the dark, sinister presence leading him astray), the fact that unlike in the manga he didn't hide under his bedsheets in fear after his first murder etc etc. It all gave the impression that he was nasty by nature which I don't think was the case.
Although that's not to say it's just the anime-only or anime-first people that hate Light. ;_;
