In no fandom I've ever been in did someone's personal faith just "come up" for no reason. Even in discussions of religion in general as it pertained to the fandom's source material -- symbolism, parallels, motifs, themes, allusions etc. -- people's individual practices were left out of it, because it was off-topic. No one asked, because no one cared.

The only time people's personal faiths became an issue was if they themselves made it so.

Which is why I'm a little leery whenever someone complains about fandom "making them hide their faith." Because the only people I've seen who ever did so were essentially complaining about the inability to use fandom as their personal pulpit, or that they have an inherent right to not be offended (which nobody has, BTW, devout religious or not).

Well, I do think we have been in different places... or are just seeing things from different perspectives.

But I did suggest to the OP somewhere earlier in the thread that they might want to try smaller, tight-knit communities (which, in my experience, seem to care about people's particular orientations less), or just to grow a steel skin.

Sometimes I get flack when I mention what I am (not shoving it on anyone), but I don't hide, nor do I really feel the need to. I *do* feel the need to keep my opinions to myself on some topics, but I think that's true of *everyone* and is a *good* thing.
