That there is more than one candidate for the Mary Sue character is the most damning thing.

Missy would have been better as The Rani.

As much as I wasn't hugely fond of Missy's obvious romantic crush on the Doctor, I could believe it for the Master, but I wouldn't for the Rani.

Yeah. The Master has always been obsessed with the Doctor, in one or another. The Rani was only bothered about him because he got in her way. I'd have been really annoyed if she'd been retconned as in love with him.
