Maybe, but there's two options:

1) It's fake, and therefore saying something sympathetic has no impact on them whatsoever and going "it's fake!" has no impact on them whatsoever either.

2) It's real, and therefore saying something sympathetic could make them feel better and saying "it's fake!" will make them feel even more shitty.

So, please tell me, oh clever anon, what exactly is the downside of saying something sympathetic, and what is the upside of saying it's fake? I'd really like to know.
