Only tangentially related, but you and your friends might enjoy Stardew Valley. Maybe it could become a different game to enjoy together without feeling guilty about not liking it?

Not OP but OMG that looks adorable and I'm putting it on my wishlist right now.

It looks like a cross between a farming/resource management game, a Sims-esque home/community-building game and some minigames? sign me the fuck up

also the visuals and music are great

More or less, yes! It also has two cave dungeons with Zelda-type combat!
And it has the most dedicated developer (this game was made by a single person. It's amazing) - he's already working on several patches that will add more content and improve the interaction and experience of married life (the one thing that's still a little underdeveloped, but he decided to release the game and add some things afterwards instead of waiting a another year or two and it's still a really great game).
And it also has same-sex marriage plus optional child adoption.

it kind of amazes me it's only $15 if it goes on sale for $10 or less I will nab it I really really want to play this now

I actually totally recommend paying the $15 if you can spare it, there's so much content in the game that it's more than worth it

I'll keep that in mind!

Mainly I'm busy with a couple other things right now fandom-wise (Homestuck, book club, replaying Undertale so I can then learn the rest of the lore) but when I have some fandom free time maybe I'll just splurge! $15 isn't that much, after all, for a really good game!

I have so many deep positive childhood associations with this game, just thinking about it or seeing images from it triggers a pavlovian reaction of feeling peaceful and warm.

this is actually a fairly common opinion lately, and I've been seeing people saying similarly for like....the past 3-ish years, at least. I think that partially explains the popularity of stardew valley. I know my own friend (that plays HM games with me) feels the same that you do. it's actually bit difficult for me personally, because I still enjoy the newer games but everyone is so negative about the titles that it's a bit of a drag to go into the harvest moon fandom now.

While FoMT and MFoMT were my favorites (MFoMT was the reason I got a GBA), I was pretty happy with the games I played up through A New Beginning. Like, legitimately happy.
I know a lot of people rejected the Lost Valley or whatever because it didn't have the social aspects, but I did think the terraforming mechanics brought an interesting new twist to the game and I'd actually like to see a proper 3D HM game with those, but also the village and marriage and all.
But oh my god Story of Seasons. I don't even think I made it to the first summer. I just got so bored and annoyed with it that I stopped playing. I liked having a horse and a cow from the very start, but I don't think that really offset the lack of a shipping box. Because it seemed like every week when the bazaar was supposed to be open, there would be some kind of weather or other event that would keep the lady from showing up. Which meant I wasn't making money. Which meant that I couldn't afford the seeds to expand my farm which means that my farming game is failing at its goal.
I much prefer Stardew Valley. I love that almost everything is open right from the start and that there's a variety of ways to make money and even though you're graded after two years in game, it looks like you have a chance to get re-graded so there's not as much pressure to finish everything by the goal time. So definitely look into that if you like Harvest Moon. And if you can't afford it, you could check the subreddit to see if there's anyone giving away copies. When it first came out some people would just buy extra copies and gift them to people who couldn't afford it.
