2) I am completely unfamiliar with the covers to editions other than the ones I have and now I must waste time Googling them to see them all.

I'm assuming that be "he" in the "He took the key by accident/He had no reason to refuse to be polite" bit, you're referring to Daystar, yeah? I think I have to disagree:
As far as the timeline goes, Daystar picks up the key, and finds out that it does "something" magical with the sword. (i.e. glowing). Shiara and the dragon sort of take over at this point; Daystar doesn't really have time to be polite/impolite, and the quozzel leaves (afraid of the dragon) really before Daystar can do anything.
The next time they meet up with it, it's because the quozzel has caused a literal cave in which breaks Shiara's arm, separates Shiara and Daystar from the dragon (and Nightwitch) and generally makes everyone feel Very Put Out. (Daystar was also caught under the rocks, though luckily with less injury.) It's not surprising to me, then, that under these specific circumstances Daystar might be a little bit less polite then normal, especially once they find out that the key was given to the quozzel by wizards, after all the trouble that Daystar and Shiara have been having with them.
