I can entirely understand this.

Same here.

I secretly hope for it, but slightly dread it at the same time.

I recently found out someone made a page for my series. It results in an extremely delighted, geeked-out feeling, and I hope you get to feel it someday. I mean, really, it's a pretty small thing, but it's also a really nice self-esteem boost. Which I kind of needed at the time.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, OP. Every larger project I've worked on, I've hoped to get a TVTropes page but never did, sadly.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But don't you know you must not seek out any sign that people enjoyed your stories? No, OP, you must write for yourself! And of course doing both at the same time is not possible.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You left your straw bale by the road, you might wanna go pick it up.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't lie.

For all the lack of attention I receive on my fics in general, it was a pleasant surprise to see that someone had referenced a WIP of mine in tvtropes.

I hope someone makes this dream come true, nonny!

Technically you can make a TV Tropes page for a fan work (and use a sock account if you really don't want anyone to know.). It's just frowned upon to try and add your own fic to to the fanfic recs page.

Though I suppose some people would find it more satisfying if someone else did. But for anyone who's ever wanted to, I'm pretty sure its okay.

there should be a circle-jerk for it. write each other's tv tropes page, with a minimum number of tropes.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-04-03 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the fact there are trope pages for fanworks. idgaf, your fic or whatever isn't more important than the thing that inspired it. But TV Tropes is shit now, so w/e.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
TV Tropes has been shit for a long time, actually. But yeah, I agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a thing? Making a tvtropes page about a fic?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a new thing. I've seen fanworks categorized there for years, via rec lists connected to media and the occasional rare page. There certainly isn't a ton, they're contained quite thoroughly in their own folders, and whatever the named user above you is raffing about isn't the norm.

It's nothing more than the 'ultimate' kudo; a fan site devoted to fandom taking a tiny bit of space to occasionally cheer on more fan stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I currently write fiction for a living, and I hope I don't run across any of my stories on it. Some people say how inspiring it is, but I usually end up feeling like shit every time I go there to look up literally anything. It's that feeling of "everything has been done and is stupid so why bother even trying."

Many people don't get that, but I really don't want to see what that site would say about my stories. Yes, I know I'm not 1000% original: thanks. I don't need to read a blow by blow of how unoriginal you think it is.

But yeah, I'm not going to look.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Tropes aren't bad, though. They're jigsaw puzzle pieces, nothing more.

That said, if it's going to negatively impact you, don't bother exposing yourself to it. At most it's just a fandom trivia tool, at best it does help outline some of the more categorically wearisome tropes.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
How in the fuck do you write fanfiction for a living?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
They said fiction, not fanfiction. Learn to read.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
TV Tropes is shit. So if your fic is on it, it's likely that it's shit too.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Is this Jaybie's secret?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
don't you have anything better to do?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

Which answer would annoy you most?

this is a valid dream.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-04 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
You can make your own. I did, to share trivia about a fic of mine.
