How Would You Respond to Suspected Pseuicide?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Or possibly Munchausen's by internet? Not that you have to respond, I won't be doing anything unless it escalates. But am I wrong to be suspicious?

Atm my only fandom is a message board for tv shows. Recently a regular poster just happened to slip into her post that she was just diagnosed with end-stage cancer. It was incredibly clunky (well, the character shouldn't have much to worry about unless they were like me and got this news:), and now the thread is clogged up with people giving condolences.

The thing is, we're not talking a very insular community or even an individual fandom. The manner of dropping that bomb was odd -- and the context was even odder, this is not a place you talk about yourself as opposed to the media unless it directly relates to the media in question. We aren't a loving tumblrite community, hell I don't bother reading peoples' screennames half the time. This poster I do remember because of her icon and prolific posting.

Would this ping your bullshit sensor too? Have you ever caught or suspected someone in the act of setting up pseuicide or munchausens by internet?

It could be bullshit....I could also just be someone who has been in denial about dying and suddenly went like "shit, one day I'll just disappear and no one will know why". If it's indeed a terminal diagnosis - well all people react to that differently.

Definitely suspected people, but never confirmed. I don't bother commenting though, it's not worth it if you happen to be wrong or and a bunch of unneeded drama happens if you're right.

yeah, this

you don't want to say something on the chance that it is true, and you have nothing to gain even if it is false

I might suspect/wonder, but I wouldn't say anything. So they get a few condolences from random people on the internet, who cares?

Here's the thing: unless nobody is demanding your money, your time, or your sanity, there's nothing lost by being nice

+2

I've witnessed my fair share of fake deaths but unfortunately have witnessed true deaths too. There is nothing lost in assuming that latter and acting as such. I would prefer to be called a gullible fool than to hurt someone through suspicious call outs.

nah, that makes it sound more believable.

if it were a community that is very social and reacts overly-friendly, then there would be an incentive to fake your own death for the reactions.

you said she's prolific, so the message board at least means something to her.

maybe, but you don't really need to call them out. just ignore it if you think it's fake, unless it's someone you know really well, I guess.
