Balance and power creep...so just for competitive battle stuff then?

They could just make better rules for those tournaments and stuff rather than making it harder to get all 700+ pokemon for your National Dex.

Yeah, seriously. I've managed to get more Pokemon in my National Dex in gen VI than in any of the previous gens. I'd be pretty annoyed if they suddenly went "oh hey not compatible with gen VII, time to start from zero!"

I got the sense from the secret that they just wanted a whole new batch of Pokemon, not to make it so you couldn't transfer stuff? Including all the previous Pokemon wouldn't fix the power creep/imbalance problems, even if it made it harder to get them. People who are serious about competitive battling will do it anyway, they're already investing a lot of time into it.
