It's nice that Eva said that after she ruined Cora's life and got what she wanted.

And James died to save his son, how was he not a good person?

I don't think James was a bad person as an adult but being altruistic towards your children is deeply-ingrained human instinct so I don't necessarily think that's good proof.

Basically we have to take the narrator's word for it on James' maturation.

Eva ruined Cora's life? Eva tripped her in a fit of childish pique and later clued Leopold in to the fact that every word that came out of Cora's mouth was a lie.

Cora ruined her own life. Or should have, but sociopaths have a way of landing on their feet. She did just fine for herself.

Cora was pregnant by another man, and planned to marry the King and trick him into thinking the baby was his, as a way to a) not have the stigma of having a child out of wedlock and b) improve her own social standing and become royalty. She was hardly the love of Leopolds life, and Eva hardly lied about Cora being pregnant. Cora is hardly a saint here, and never improves in character or personality, whereas Eva appears to.
