I kind of agree with this, but I also think that Sam is the trickiest character to play well. It's really easy to turn him into a cliche, which I think Sean Astin avoided for the most part. But I think that Sean's Sam was a little too pessimistic and not quite cynical, but headed in that direction. And that made some of the scenes where Sam needs to be really earnest and sincere and hopeful feel forced. I also think that physically and mentally, he was a little too old for the role. I think book-Sam is 35-ish when they form the Fellowship, which puts him just past majority,so equivalent to a human in their early 20s in terms of social maturity. Sean played Sam as 35 going on 50.
