The best way is to go for the Venn Diagram approach - read news from multiple sources and only take as the truth the things that all of them overlap on, and discard the bits that are only said by one source and not the others.

Of course, this takes way more time to do properly than most people have to spare so it's probably a no-go.

This kind of works, but many many articles are based on one Ur-article or interview, so they're all or mostly distortions of one original piece of reporting or primary source.
