I'm American and I had no problem figuring it out. But keep in mind that "ma'am" is not a typical mode of address in many areas of the U.S. You might hear it more in the South, but less often in the North. And it's not usually used in a professional context. People are unlikely to call their female boss "ma'am".

I'm from Ohio and use ma'am a lot with my patients, but then I was raised by a Marine so that might have something to do with it.

A lot of people in the US find 'Ma'am' rude because it implies that they're old. I literally got written up at work for calling a customer Ma'am once.

Old biddy was 80 and shrieking at me, but sure, I was in the wrong. *eyeroll*

Aww, you were totally in the right with the "Ma'am" comment, IMHO! Would she have preferred that you call her "Madam", thus sort of implying she owns a brothel?!

Written up? Dang. Talk about an overreaction.

I don't get that, either. I worked retail and called women "ma'am" all the time. Unless the woman in question is a regular customer whose name I would know, how exactly am I supposed to address them otherwise? "Miss" doesn't always fit, either, especially if the woman's married, so... Am I just supposed to say, "Hey, you there!" instead?
