Yeah-- in the book, the arguments between Sam and Gollum come off as childish bickering between people who don't particularly like each other. It helps to humanize (hobbitize?) Gollum, but doesn't make you think less of Sam because Gollum really is a pain in the ass and an evil little shit. In the movie, Sam just comes off as a bully a lot of the time. I blame that on the direction though -- PJ was trying so hard to make Gollum a sympathetic character that he ends up making Sam look like a dick.
