Pairings you ship, without having seen the source

[personal profile] skeletal_history 2016-04-06 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen 10 seconds of The 100, but thanks to a few tumblr posts on my dash this week, welp, I ship Abby/Kane now. Today, I've spent two hours looking through tumblr posts and reading fic for them, and they're hitting all the right buttons for me. Don't really have any plans to watch the show, though!

Likewise Frank/Karen on Daredevil. Loved the first season, haven't seen the second, but I eat up all the Frank/Karen fic I can find.

Do you do this, too?

I'm kind of shipping Kylo/Hux and Poe/Finn and I haven't seen the movie yet. I generally might get hit with a ship beforehand but I will watch the material eventually and I can still come out of it shipping something totally different.

Not anymore (I've since watched the show), but for a very long time I shipped Brienne/Jaime from GoT. I didn't even know their names so I called them Lady Knight and One Handed Hobo. I read several long, mythos filled fics about them. I was lost on a lot of stuff but I enjoyed the hell out of the fics.

Sorry to be pedantic, but how the heck did you find the fics if you didn't know their names?

I didn't read fics until I learned their names and got the rundown of the characters from my sister.

I started shipping Sauron/Celebrimbor based on a fic before I even read the Silmarillion. After reading, I still loved the ship, though I've come to ship Sauron/Melkor a bit more.

I haven't seen "Agents of SHIELD" at all thus far, but I've been intrigued by the Fitz/Simmons ship from what I've seen and heard about it. It seems to fit the types of ships I tend to go for.

I would like to check out the show someday, so...we'll see how that goes.

If you saw the show, you'd probably be less interested in the ship. It got a bit squicky.

I've not seen Person of Interest, but from what I've seen on my dash I low-key ship Root/Shaw.

I don't even know how one does this. Is it just a purely physical "they're hot and would be hot together" thing?

For me, it's a lot of art that's on my dash and headcanons that people have. I've kind of seen the scenes the characters are in as they're gifed. And I've read some fic. So, I became interested in them from a visual/story-telling place and became hooked reading fic.

They're hot, plus, semi-exposure to the fandom gives you an idea - accurate or not - of what the dynamics of these characters are and a vague understanding of the setting. For me, it'd be a case of me not being interested in the series itself - for any reason (too long, not my genre, whatever) but something about my perceived dynamic of these hot characters in that setting rings my bells.

If I read a fic and like the dynamic, I may end up shipping even if I haven't read canon yet. though in my case, I'd read part of canon, just not the parts containing the ship.

If I see a bunch of fics on AO3 from a particular ship that all feature a bunch of dynamics and tropes I like, I'm definitely going to check that out, especially if it's popular (because that means there's going to be a ton of fic for me to read if I do like it). Or if I'm searching via tags to start with.

So yeah. Mostly an AO3 thing for me.

And you can usually pick up enough info from fandom osmosis to make it work.

Usually it's more about the dynamics and/or actors than whether they're hot.

A couple times it's been because I've heard people talking about the source (or read a review) and I shipped it just because of the way the characters/dynamic were described.

And in a couple other examples, it was because the actors had worked together before and I'd shipped their previous characters so I shipped the new ones automatically because I knew the actors had chemistry.

Swan Queen

like, listen, the show doesn't seem good but there's really not many femslash ships with that amount of fanworks about them

(weirdly not at all a Clexa fan, idk man)

I ship Souji/Yosuke from Persona 4. I've never played the game, and I've watched one episode of the anime.
