Where to find dresses appropriate to wear to a wedding?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Or what to wear if not a dress.

So I'm going to a wedding in like a week and a half and I have no idea what I'm going to wear.

My mom said she plans on wearing a nice blouse and dress pants (it's a family friend getting married and I'm going with my parents) but I feel like a dress is more appropriate. I only have two formal dresses, though, and neither is appropriate (one is black and one is white/black patterned). I'm not sure what color to go with (the wedding colors are pink and gray so I'm assuming those are out) or where to even begin looking for one (I haven't bought a dress in forever and don't remember where the two I have came from).

Anyone have any ideas of what stores to check? What color to look for? Or what I should wear if you don't think I should wear a dress for whatever reason?

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with black imo, some people consider it a more formal color.

Unless there are instructions on the invitation, I would say just wear something nice and not white. As for stores, any department store probably.

I've heard that for some people, wearing black to a wedding is offensive because you're "mourning" their wedding and it's considered an insult?

It depends on the wedding/culture. For a wedding in Manhattan attended by young professionals, sure, black is fine. But in other places, wearing black to a wedding is a faux-pas because it's the color people wear to funerals.

I suppose - I am from the US South and don't see a problem with it especially if its a very formal wedding, but ey different strokes.

Rest of my advice stands thogh

Is it an evening wedding? And does the invitation mention a dress code?

I wore black trousers and a teal blouse to my cousin's wedding. I wasn't going to waste money on a dress I'd probably never wear again.

I'd agree with your mom that dress pants and a nice blouse are fine, especially since you're more likely to wear both again over a fancy dress.

Unless you buy something secondhand?

If you've got the coin, you can always try a boutique.

If not, as suggested before, any department store will do. Even places like TJ Maxx and Ross.

As for what's appropriate, it depends. Is it warm? Is it cold? Will you be outside, or inside? Night wedding or day wedding?

If it's warm, for example, you might get away with a short dress with a hemline at the knee. A simple shift dress might work, tan or light blue.

If the wedding is outside and the weather is nice, you could do a halter dress that goes to the ankle and wear a shawl or light jacket.

If it's cold, make sure you've got some good fabric, preferably something lined.

If not a dress, you can try a light colored pants suit with white camisol.

A week and a half doesn't leave much time, but modcloth.com has some cute dresses. You should also check Target online, which has more selection than the stores.

Wedding traditions vary depending on region and the people involved, but to be honest, unless it's a very formal wedding your white/black one would probably be fine. Traditionally, people avoid wearing white, black and maybe red. Keep in mind that the focus won't really be on you, so chances are you're sweating this decision far more than is necessary.

The last wedding I went to, I bought the dress at Torrid. The one before that, I got a sleeveless dress and co-ordinating short-sleeved jacket from I think Ross?

I've also been comparison shopping for a wedding this summer. I second the suggestion of modcloth, which is where I'll probably be making my choice later. For more vintage-y inspired dresses, including plus sizes, check out unique-vintage.com. I've gotten around 4 dresses there in the past, usually the Stop Staring! label, and the quality is lovely. However, one of the most interesting sites I've come across in my search is us.shein.com (SheInside). Interesting and wide selection, many shipping in 24 hours, with shockingly low prices. I have absolutely no idea what the quality is, but hey it's worth looking at.

One tip I would say I have from my experience in friends' and my sister's wedding is be wary of the more bold geometric and large floral mulitcolor patterns. One girl in a bold pattern looks nice; a group photo of six of them all in competing prints a bit less so.
