Snyder was apparently handpicked by Nolan to take the rein. Nolan is still the producer for these Superman movies.

More importantly, he's the screenwriter for Man of Steel (along with Davis S. Goyer, who wrote Batman v Superman), which set the idea of how Superman would be portrayed.
