3. It's not even shounen ai? That's the label I see for it most frequently, although I haven't read it, simply because I never -found- it anywhere. I hear the dynamic's much different from the anime's though.

25. I could take this one of two ways, so I'm just going to ask.
Is this a 'Ed's too young' comment or a 'Dear God, stop writing them like women' comment? Either way, I can completely follow where you're coming from, but I'm just curious.

3. That's the opinion of all the 12 year old fangirls that squeal over it. Yes, Soubi and Ritsuka do kiss, but that is because Soubi needs some way to bond with Ritsuka in order to be used by him. It's not like they can have a tea party and do each other's nails. Even if they were somehow a couple, that's simply one element of the story. In order for it to be shounen ai, it would have to me the main composition of the plot, but it's not. The story is about Ritsuka trying to find himself and figure out what happened to his brother. So no matter what the fangirls tell you, don't believe it. It's just wishful thinking on their part.

25. It's an "I like MEN!" comment. FMA seems to have taken a vote in which all slash must contain Ed. I like Ed just fine, as Ed. I prefer him without the trappings of shitty romance and as mature as he can be, he's still too immature for me to pair him up with any of the adults in the show. Maybe his brother, but not Roy. Either way, I prefer to read about men. I'd rather read about Breda, Falman, Fury, Archer, Broche, Kimblee, Armstrong, Havoc, Scar, Dr. Marco, ANYONE else, who's balls have actually dropped and have passed through puberty and who can hold their own in a relationship. Sure, maybe Ed could....if all the fans didn't write him like a girl, but I'd rather not read about it.

Besides, men are just hotter. I'd rather have someone with hair on their balls (and other places). Of course, your standard fangirl will just implode upon hearing that. You mean all men aren't clean-shaven hairless bishies?!?!?!

3. I guess my confusion on the matter probably has more to do with being misdirected as to what the real meaning of shounen ai is. Your point makes perfect sense, I've just seen shounen ai paired up with 'contains kissing/relationship stuff' more than actually being about that dynamic. Inclusively rather than exclusively, or at least close to it.

25. Seems to cover both aspects of my original question, yeah. I only like to read Ed in relationship fics, either with someone his own age or post series - when he's an actual adult. I don't want to read porn about a fifteen-year-old, ever. The complete destruction of character personalities in FMA fanfic is what has kept me from reading much of it, the entire time I've been in fandom... but for the most part, I prefer gen-fic myself.

3. Honestly, I think about 10% of the fans actually know what the terms mean and they're all well past their teens. Not blaming you or anything, but so many people perpetuate these false definitions that people keep buying into them. Bet you didn't know that Shounen Ai is a term that is now used to refer to pedophilia, as in adults loving little boys instead of boys loving boys. The preferred term is now Boy Love (or Boys Love) or just BL for short.

Either way, fangirls who perceive even the slightest amount of intimacy between two characters go apeshit retardo because it's "OMG YAOI!" Um, no kids, it's not.

25. I always wondered why Russell Tringham wasn't more popular. He and Ed have the same antagonistic dynamics that Roy had, but they're closer in age and Russell is cute and blond. I really like the idea of them together, fumbling through first love and fights and drama and all that. I think they'd both push each other to be better alchemists and it just seems like it'd work out a whole hell of a lot better than Roy and Ed. I imagine that Roy would get no end of flack from the military and everyone around him should he dare to touch Ed. It doesn't seem like it'd be a pretty thing.

3. Meanings of words evolve, get over it. English fandom does not need to follow the pure Japanese terminology for everything. If 90% of the English-speaking fandom believe that "Shounen-ai" means "contains boys kissing" rather than "boys kissing is the focus of the entire plot", then that is what it should be taken to mean or at least imply in English fandom. Take it with a pinch of salt if you know, point it out to people if you need to, but here you come off as grumpy and elitist. Please, please do not gripe about n00b fangirls not knowing the ways of the great fujoshi masters. Educate, please, do not make me sad to be a fangirl of many years.

Either way, while something with gay side-characters may not be called "Shounen-ai" or "BL" by fans, the fact is that Soubi/Ritsuka is pretty much the main pairing of the series (they are the main characters after all), and while their relationship is not the full focus of the plot, it certainly appeals mostly to BL fans because of the fetishy feel of the manga/anime, and therefore that is what will be latched onto and what people will hype on. It's mostly BL fans who will watch loveless. 90% of the people who watch loveless are tolerant of/like BL. Loveless is a fetishy manga, and its' not exactly child-friendly or mainstream the way Ouran is, with or without the twincest.

That's just my two cents. Take it how you will.

to OP: Loveless is worth reading for the story. The first two books seem fetishy and strange, but if you keep going there are a lot of questions to be answered and the events are intriguing. It's also lovely to see the main character grow. Side characters are sweet and engaging, and the relationships between them are beautifully developed. The battle system is also incredibly poetic and full of mystery.

Ignore the cat ears; honestly i don't know why they're there other than to add to the whole fetish feel, along with the gratuitous use of chains and bondagey clothes... ;; don't watch the anime :/ the manga's better

3. So if I decide to suddenly start calling all yaoi pedophilia, that's ok because the meanings of words change? That's pretty much what you're saying.

I can't educate people if you're gonna pull this bleeding heart anon shit. Why don't you crawl back in your mouse hole and leave the education to the people with a clue and the balls to actually educate?
