A lot of people are HIGHLY resistant to the suggestion that they might be even a teensy bit racist, especially when it comes to what gets them off.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't racism just to prefer a certain race aesthetically or to have sex with.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, right on time.

If we're agreed that there latent racism in fandom and that defensive 'no I'm not and HDU!?' is a shitty response, then what response would be a desirable, productive one?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
In the context of somebody pointing out that racism, probably just to say "shit I didn't think of it that way. I know these are the things that appeal to me about [white + white ship], but I hadn't considered that there might be other reasons they're popular." And then, like. Think about it. As someone who's tried this thought experiment, once you allow for the possibility that your preference for all-white relationships might be linked to some latent/cultural racism, you start to see characters of color as much more interesting--because you're, like, literally thinking about them as characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I have tried this "thought experiment" and there are a bunch of non-white characters I like very much. This has not affected my shipping tendencies. Maybe you need to explain this to my vagina.

(though, it's only black guys I'm not often attracted to. I seem to be okay with virtually all other races)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, personally? I don't much care. To be clear, I don't think that (for example) only being attracted to white guys makes someone a bad person. Nobody is 100% free of racist thoughts. But I think it'd be interesting if people acknowledged that yes, race does influence their sexual preferences in ways that are, well, kinda racist. You like what you like, but that doesn't alter the fact that to think a person is less attractive because they're one race or another is, by definition, racist.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I mean you can't guilt/shame someone into finding a ship appealing, but at the same time I hate there's such an atmosphere of justifying why you like/dislike a ship and 'good' reasons and 'bad' reasons for both.

Like I feel bad that Rhodey/Steve should hit most of my slash-pairing tick marks, but I just feel meh about it and... a big part is probably that I just don't find either of Rhodey's actors appealing. But at the same time I've been happy with other pairings that aren't 100% on the visuals but hit the same number of tick marks.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
You mean Sam, right?

Sam is Steve's black friend, Rhodey is Tony's.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Typed Steve when I meant Tony, so Rhodey/Tony just doesn't do it for me.

I actually really like Avengers Assemble Sam/Tony though.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-13 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO not responding at all would be preferable to 'no I'm not and HDU!?'

(Anonymous) 2016-04-06 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Because racism is a problem and problems tend to want solutions. The implied solution is '...therefore to diversify you must now ship interracial pairings, which will involve a lot of play-acting on your part if you're not attracted to them and producing content related to them if you would normally do that for a white ship'.

It's really just the same ship war bullshit there's always been, but with just enough connection to real world issues that ship failure becomes MORAL failure.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
How is it "ship wars" to talk about this on a general, fandom-wide platform? I didn't notice the secret OP mentioning any one particular pairing they were salty about because racism is well and alive in fandom, they're talking about in general, and I agree one thousand fucking percent. If you don't think there is a HUGE racism problem in fandom you're living under a rock. I've seen people try and desperately shove the nearest two white cocks together in some really hilariously fail-worthy ways ("oh look, that white guy that was in one episode and had like 8 lines with the other white guy, yeah, let's let them become the new fandom OTP darling!" type shit) when there's huge juicy slash pairing involving a man of colour going pretty much unexplored because fandom doesn't like shipping brown or black people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
My one experience with this was Star Wars fandom, where Finn/Poe was the big juggernaut pairing until it got taken over by Kylo/Hux (Hux who barely gets lines in the film). But you know what, I totally got and supported that because all the fucking policing that went hand-in-hand with Finn/Poe shipping made that fandom unbearable, particularly when it was the juggernaut. So maybe sometimes it really is just about people not wanting to deal with that shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I think that this is less the skin colour and more the "the evil guys are always more fascinating" working there. (And the policing but that is generally bad in the fandom atm. - except for the Kylux fandom for the most part, which is surprisingly judge-free...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Finn/Poe is still a huge, popular pairing. Kylux having so more fics on AO3 is not an indication of Finn/Poe no longer being popular, fandom exists outside of a fic archive ffs.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm blatantly racist when it comes to what gets me off.

IT'S ALMOST LIKE I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHAT GETS ME OFF OR SOMETHING.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
This is true. And not getting defensive about it is the best way to show other people that you acknowledge the racist aspects of this, but it's still not a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
You're pretty stupid if you think these preferences were just like...genetically programmed into you. (I.e. "OH NOEEEZ I CAN'T CONTROL ITTTTT WHUT PEOPLE OF COLOUR SEXUALLY ATTRACTIVE?? NEVAAAARRR") People just don't like to take responsibility to think about this shit, so you all act like you've got racism hardwired into your DNA.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but wtf. So apparently just because I like eating apples more than I like eating oranges, a preference that literally only matters to me and only myself, I'm in the wrong now?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
human beings aren't food you absolute moron

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
LMFAO

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, preferences aren't genetic, but by the time people are self-aware enough to realize the details of their preferences, they are pretty much hardwired into their psyche. You can't train yourself out of wanting to bang who you want to bang in your 20s and 30s; if you want to dismantle race-based attraction patterns, you need to dismantle the cultural training to see certain features as attractive and other features as unattractive that people tend to get pretty much from infancy.

DA

I have absolutely NO obligation to change my tastes so that other fans approve of them. Fuck you and fuck everyone else who spouts that shit.
