am I the only one who finds it weird when people refer to a "slash fandom" - like slash is the fandom itself, rather then a subset of many different fandoms

I sometimes come across people who seem to be mainly in it for the m/m action, who do things like make a slashy fan video about two characters who have NEVER MET. I can imagine that there might be people who care more about finding characters they can slash than about the show/book/movie and might be attracted to media they hear has a popular slash pairing. I don't think that's most people, however. I think it's more that people get into something because it looks interesting overall and then get interested in a slash pairing (same with het shipping), which is why people are going to get defensive about this because there was never an intentional effort to seek out specific types of characters to pair off.

I think it speaks to the fact that people who like slash tend to like it in a bunch of different fandoms, so somebody who's in Teen Wolf fandom and Supernatural Fandom and Merlin fandom (to pull out the old 2013 references) and was big into all the slash ships would also be part of "slash fandom": meaning that general disorganized but passionate conglomerate of fans of all stripes who love the dick + dick

But a huge portion of those people, in my experience, also have tons of het ships (and many have f/f ships as well).
