As someone who's always found the character ridiculous, it's nice to see another perspective and experience. I'm glad she helped you gain confidence, OP! :-)

Why do you consider her ridiculous?

Tomb Raider has always been a strikingly feminist game series. She's never depended on men, in the first two backstories, she made her own fortune. In the first because she was disowned by her parents for the adventuring, in the second because she was caught up in an extended legal battle with relatives, and a lot of the 'villains' in her games have been women (Natla, Amanda, Sophia, etc).

It's always been shown that she goes through these tombs and ancient cities and such with cleverness and working with them, not just brute forcing her way through.

I find it more ridiculous that people take an athletic, adventurous, intelligent, confident woman game character and reduce her to 'lol bewbs'.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean this as a 'political' statement about the new Lara vs old Lara. I love both, and they each have ways of communicating their strength. It just happened to be old Lara who was around when I was at my most impressionable.

This secret made me super happy and I've never even played Tomb Raider. <3 (It's on my list. My long, long list.)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-07 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never played any of the games with old!Lara but I adore new!Lara, so this makes me happy to see. :) She's awesome and I'm sure she was equally as awesome then. I love the whole idea of basically a female Indiana Jones.

Good for you, OP!

There was a character that helped me gain self confidence, and I learned how to walk like him too! Definitely still makes me smile and brightens my day/confidence, 10 years later.

I've done the same, except I use Robert Carlyle's bad-ass strut from...nearly everything. :) Makes me feel tough.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Tonight I met a teenage girl with a strikingly large chest. Not Lara Croft large, exactly, but big enough & disproportionate enough to throw me. I hope I wasn't staring.

On the one hand, I understand why average-sized women find annoying the big breasts some artists have a default. But I think it's kind of harsh that some people think a busty fantasy woman is unfeminist.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-08 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This is awesome.

As a woman, I find it very frustrating that Anita Sarkeesian would like to stomp out all traces of this type of female character with no regard for the women who enjoy it or feel empowered by it.
