The obvious choice would be Watchmen or V for Vendetta.

Maybe American Virgin, but that's quite a different genre.

The're part of a larger universe, but I can recommend Tales of the Jedi, as they're pretty self-contained.

Blacksad (though I've not read all of it, but the art is lovely)

If you'e into the style and theme, anything but Marjane Satrapi really (Persepolis being the most known).
