Well it DID came out first in those countries and still has a big following in those places. So there's that.

If the heavily edited DiC dub hadn't appeared on Adult Swim it's possible that it would have had a larger English-language following in the US. But what can we do? As T'Pau said, The air is the air. (At least the English StS fandom is larger and more active than Basara.)

My main wish for StS is that the Lost Canvas anime had done well enough to be completed (an R1 release is too much to ask for; at least it's on CR), or that the manga will someday get an official English release. The story's just as powerful, the art is gorgeous, and the characterizations are marvelous.

I don't think the heavily edited dub was the problem. After all, Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon were also heavily edited, but they managed to become big hits in the US. I think we just got the show too late and it looked old in comparison to all other anime shows. I was thrilled when it premiered on Cartoon Network, but that was because I used to watch the Latin American dub with my cousins and already liked the show. I knew people who were kinda into it, but I remember the show having a kinda erratic schedule on Cartoon Network, so that might've killed it too.

Did they also replace all the blood in DBZ with "blue sweat"? And edit in random clips of waves crashing on the shore for most of Lizard Misty's appearence? (grins)

(Don't even get me started on the wosdom of making Hyouga a wisecracking surfer dude!)

I much prefer ADC's dub (and I'm so glad that the final 12 eps were finally released.)

I remember seeing green blood on DBZ, but I don't think that lasted long. Lol Hyouga's voice. I really want to know what conversation led to the dub team thinking that was a good idea.

I must admit, I've never seen the ADV dub (ended up watching the LA dub and some subs). Would you recommend it?

(*oops, ADV not ADC!)

I didn't think the ADV duv was that bad, tbh ( and it was certainly far better than the DiC dub), but YMMV. (I dimly recall hearing an episode of a Singapore dub at some point.)

I mostly bought the R1 DVDs of eps 1-60 back when they were released because they were dual language, and I wanted decent English subs to replace my gray market HK set (which had such gems as "I have learned of your fisting from Seiya"). ~ More recently there's been a thinpak re-release that included the final Sanctuary eps, but the last time I checked the reviews on Amazon I thought people were saying that that set was dub only, so I haven't bought it.

I read part of the manga for this! It's sooo pretty. <3

It was pretty big in the States during the late 80s, as I recall. Wasn't my cup of tea but I remember the fangirls loving it.

It probably would've been more popular in the US and other English-speaking countries if 1) it had been released much sooner than 2002 or so, and 2) it wasn't so horrifically mishandled when it finally was brought over.

For the first point...by the time it was released here, it already looked very dated, and that immediately turned off the fickle fans who want everything to look new and shiny. I really think that if Saint Seiya had come here in some form in the early '90s during the beginning of the anime boom, it would be as beloved as Sailor Moon or Dragonball still are today. (I mean goodness, more American anime fans know of Yoroiden Samurai Troopers/Ronin Warriors, which was meant to be a Saint Seiya clone, than they do Saint Seiya itself, and that's because we got that here in the '90s.)

The second point...the Knights of the Zodiac dub we got in the early 2000s was a giant kool-aid-colored mess. And I mean that almost literally, because they edited all the blood so that it was every other color but red. Cartoon Network also never promoted it, so it died out pretty quickly (it wasn't on Adult Swim as mentioned in another comment). And to this day? We still don't have the entirety of the TV series available legitimately in the US. We have everything else in some shape or form, and we have the Sanctuary arc (and badly subbed at that), but we still don't have Asgard or Poseidon. At the rate things are going, I'm not confident we'll ever get them.

I thought it was on Adult Swim, airing at about the same time as Reign: The Conquerer? No? I guess my memory is faulty.

(Aw, the ADC dub isn't so bad! I thought the guy who did Seiya was actually rather good, though I would have switched the VAs for Shiryuu and Hyouga.)

Actually, all of the Saint Seiya OVA and series ARE on Crunchyroll -- Asgard and Poseidan in addition to Sanctuary -- as well as Soul of Gold, Omega, Hades, and Lost Canvas. Enjoy!

More Bigger

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-04-10 01:52 am (UTC)(link)

big>>bigger>>biggest. "More bigger" doesn't work in standard English.

Not making fun of you (seriously, my students have issues with this stuff too, including native speakers!). Grammar's hard.

... unless of course you are talking about someone whose name (or nickname) is Bigger, and you simply want more of them. :p
