The point about shipping food can also be made about some meats, and that also applies to factory farmimg. Likewise, trying to eat locally can be done for plant-based foods as well as meat.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-09 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)Turns out, factory farming of produce is also terrible for the environment. Vegans can claim the high ground because the only animals that died for their food were the ones whose homes were plowed up for fields, the ones that were poisoned, trapped or shot for trying to eat things in those fields, and the ones that were run over by the trucks moving the food from the farm to the grocery store.
Unless they keep cats. Then they're also supporting animal slaughter for Princess Fluffy's sake.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)As someone from North Dakota, guess what, people don't generally shoot their own food. They buy it in grocery stores. You think the average meat eater only buys "local" meat, any more than they buy "local" plants? Ha. And guess what, any argument you have against animals suffering in the farming process still applies to you if you eat any farmed food, plus, the horrendous institution of factory farming.
and why in the world are you even talking about cats.

Cats kill billions of animals every year. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-21236690

(Anonymous) 2016-04-10 12:27 am (UTC)(link)(and, by the way, those studies have been called into question, mainly because housecats more than not are killing invasive, non-native species more than anything, so aren't actually seriously impacting local ecosystems, if you can even call an in-town setting such... but that's a completely different topic)

(Anonymous) 2016-04-10 01:10 am (UTC)(link)I've never met a vegan who feeds their cat vegan food. I've never even seen vegan cat food, and as a vegetarian, I've been to several "vegan-friendly" supermarkets. I agree, it would be idiotic and harmful to the cat to feed them vegan food. That doesn't mean we should mindlessly support industries that basically torture massive numbers of animals. I am not a vegan, and I go out of my way to buy cat food that uses free range livestock, I'd rather put my money out there to support industries with even the smallest regard for animal welfare.
Whether or not meat is necessary for human consumption, or ethical, or sustainable - these arguments are independent for anyone with three brain cells from talks of animals that are carnivores.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-10 12:29 am (UTC)(link)The vast majority of livestock are grain-fed, and those grains involve... farming, animals dying in tractor equipment etc... plus, the gas of the farming equipment, plus the shipping.
The meat industry, as it currently exists, takes a gross amount of resources and is not sustainable.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-10 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)However, most animals are not fed grains. At least not here. They (whether conventional or organic) go outside and eat grass etc. from late spring to early fall. They mostly eat silage, hay, beets, and pressed rapeseed during winter. Much of which is produced locally.
