Of course, I quit SPN somewhere near the end of the fourth season, so I can't really speak to Sam's stance on hunting (though I did get pretty tired of it in the first couple of seasons).

But if a lead character consistently complained about something I thought was cool and an integral part of the show, it would kind of distance me from the character. That's not to say they can't complain about the crappy parts of their job/calling/whatever, everybody does that. I mean, McKay (Stargate Atlantis) complained about lots of things, but he really genuinely wanted to be on Atlantis and loved parts of his job - if he hadn't, he would have been unbearable, to me, anyway, since I thought Atlantis was cool.

That's a good comparison, thanks. Liking Atlantis is something you share in common with the character. And yet it also brings a lot of danger and death and stuff, right?
