What's art based roleplaying?

Not OP

But I'm taking them to mean ask blogs and the like - they (we?*) roleplay by drawing images, comics etc. Then another blog will draw an image in response and goes on like that

Is that what that is? Oh, Hell, that's a lot better than what I thought it was. A whole lot better!

There's NSFW roleplays done this way too, so be careful before you go into the pokeask or mlpask tags ;)

I'm also vaguely aware of...I have a post I made with a video that blew up - just a dog doing some tricks - there are some people roleplaying in that with reblogs. I'm kind of ignoring it, it's like old msn roleplaying - one or two lines each. But I don't think OP is referring to that as doesn't seem as common.

Here's an example of two formats - many are done by one RP blog sending an ask to another (or submitting an image) and the other RP blog responding with an image. Then the original blog or another can respond with an image if they want.

Sometimes it's one image, sometimes it's a comic, sometimes it's a really detailed image/comic and sometimes it's just a sketch or scribble.

Man. I almost miss my old art rp blogs

So Ask Lord Cthulhu was an RP blog. I didn't know what to call it; I just sent in some questions to see the pretty art.

When I saw "art based RP" I was picturing those old Neopets boards where they took a bunch of google images and were like "this is my character, this is what she's wearing, this is her car". Damn, I haven't been back there since 2006...

Roleplay where instead of posting text about what your character is doing, you draw a quick picture of what your character is doing. I heard of a site for it a couple years back, but I've never heard of it on Tumblr.

I'm pretty sure it's where, instead of writing "Jake glared at Michael," you'd draw Jake glaring at Michael.

That sounds pretty cool... although it seems work intensive.

but written rp tends to describe too much and not interact enough, so the pace might be better.

My thoughts exactly

It sounds wonderful in theory, but spending a whole day drawing a comic, just to wait another day or more for a response would drive me up the wall

I'm very impatient, and the few times I've RPd, I've always tried to respond as quickly as possible so we could get more done

I had a similar experience in concern to the difference to mail list RP and journal-based RP, and to a lesser degree, long writing RP compared to short writing.

I just can't keep track of who does what in a mailing list or message board setting, while LJ-style journals, instant messenger and Twitter work fine.

I also am not very great at enforced long-length formats like you refer to, I prefer formats where the length of replies can be as short as they end up.

So TL;DR, sometimes it's all a question of finding the format that suits you that makes it work.

I love drawing and roleplaying but man that seems like a lot of work to draw every reply
