I think they mean like the game "chicken," where two people get as close to kissing as they can before one chickens out. Gay chicken is when you're both dudes or ladies?

The trope is basically, "we're two dudes/ladies who got into a relationship on a dare/bet/etc., except now we're actually developing real feelings for each other HELP." Not quite my thing, but I totally understand the appeal.

Dude, me too. I don't even know why. I really love "first time" as a trope, too, though. It probably has something to do with that.

My favourite kind are the meta ones that aren't actually fic, but someone describing the extent of gay chicken two characters go through just to win. Marriage, children, divorce, re-marrying, seniors home...

I feel bad for giggling, but I just pictured a comic strip with two guys standing head to head, staring each other down, holding the same pose while the background changes from their room to an engagement ring shop, to a wedding altar (with them in tuxes), to an adoption agency, to a living room with two kids playing, to a living room with a banner that says "Happy 50th wedding anniversary!" to one of them standing over the other's grave going "Ha! I win! I am the KING of gay chicken!"
